Effective E-Mail Subject Lines

What is the first thing you scan in your e-mail inbox? It's the subject line. If it catches your attention, then you check to see who sent it. Your relationship with your readers/customers starts with the subject line.

Strong subject lines are essential for a productive email marketing program. Here are a few quick pointers for crafting subject lines that get results:

Get to the Point

Numerous studies show that the best subject lines are between 30 and 40 characters. So the challenge is balancing length and content.

We recommend that you employ direct language and descriptions and always include your brand name in the subject line or email alias.

Avoid Obvious Pitfalls

Before you send any email or newsletter, run it through a spam checker to diagnose potential content problems.

Be careful not to sound “spammy” in your subject line. Avoid phrases like “Free”, “Offer”, “Money”, excessive use of exclamation marks, misspelled words, ALL CAPS, etc.

Subject lines that are overly aggressive and/or promotional are likely to be filtered into a junk folder or blocked as spam.

Relevancy is Key

Speak to your contacts on a one-to-one basis. Use personalization to refer to contacts by name, geography, or group.

Education Forum – October 30” is an OK subject line. “Education Forum opens in Manchester on October 30” is a much better subject line.

Relevancy in your subject lines is absolutely critical in coaxing the contact to open the message.

Testing, 1,2,3.

Find what works for you. Define objectives, set benchmarks for opens, clicks, conversions, etc., and continue to customize and refine your subject lines over time to find the right phrasing and structure.

Also – once you think you’ve got it figured out – fight the temptation to rest on your laurels. Continue to test and re-test to find new ways to engage your audience.

Viruses and attachments

While you can’t send attachments with messages as you would with Microsoft Outlook, you can create a virtual "attachment" by linking to a document in the body of your message.

Our email is guaranteed to be free from viruses. Viruses spread through attachments. By choosing not to support attachments at all, we are able to completely remove the virus risk.
-You are advised to take your own steps to protect against viruses

-Read on for the scoop...

Why e-marketing doesn't allow attachments:

1. Attachments increase the size of your message. The larger the file size, the more susceptible your message becomes to a filter or an outright block. Also, ESPs (especially free ones like Hotmail, Yahoo etc) limit the size of emails it will accept and deliver to an inbox. A message with an attachment might not be delivered because it puts the recipient over their mailbox quota.

2. Attachments can’t be opened by all users. Not all people run the same operating system and/or use the same applications. Although they have the file, they might not be able to actually open it.

3. Attachments sometimes can raise red flags. Smart email users will sometimes question attachments because of a potential virus and damage to their computer.

4. Viruses spread through attachments. If Edumailing allowed this functionality in, we would make our customers unnecessarily susceptible to a virus attack. By choosing to not support attachments at all, we're able to completely remove the virus risk for our customers.

Instead of an attachment in the typical sense, we recommend that we “host” your “attachment” and link to it in the body of your message. Here's why:

1. Linking to the document mitigates all of the potential delivery problems you might encounter with attachments.

2. Linking to the document enables us to view the contacts that "open" the "attachment" via 's click-through tracking. Links to a .pdf or .doc work just like a link to a URL and thus will appear in your link tracking and click-through overlay reports.

Here's how we do it. First, we host image files, Word documents and PDFs.

Now that your file is hosted, your e-marketing will direct the school contacts to view it through a hyperlink in a message (Please note this is only possible through rich text or html and not plain text).

Harness the power of E- marketing

Develop an e-marketing plan

E-marketing gives businesses of any size access to the mass market at an affordable price and, unlike TV or print advertising, it allows truly personalised marketing.

Lower cost - a properly planned and effectively targeted e-marketing campaign can reach the right customers at a much lower cost than traditional marketing methods.

Trackable, measurable results - marketing by email makes it easier to establish how effective your campaign has been. You can obtain detailed information about customers' responses to your promotion.

Better conversion rate - if you have a website, then your customers are only ever a few clicks away from completing a purchase. Unlike other media which require people to get up and make a phone call, post a letter or go to a shop, e-marketing is seamless..
